Why ALEX?
ALEX was developed based on years of feedback and industry insights from AHead's first product, CARL. While training professionals how to perform key procedures in hearing healthcare, it was clear there was a gap in proper hearing demonstrations. There was a clear need for both clinicians to better understand the products they are dispensing, and better ways to pass along that knowledge to patients and the public in a non-technical format.
By using ALEX for sound demos, we can reduce complex descriptions of products and features, and provide a sound experience in its place for better understanding and adoption.
How Do I Setup ALEX for Hearing Demos?
To set up ALEX, plug it into a power outlet, turn it on, plug in your headphones, and you will instantly hear what ALEX is hearing! From there, you can fit your hearing aids on ALEX as you would a patient.
For more complex set ups of ALEX with a multi-speaker array, there is also a microphone stand on the bottom for in-field placement.
Which ALEX Package is Right For Me?
Choose ALEX Demo for focusing on demonstrating features with aided vs unaided comparisons. ALEX Demo has a more natural single-ear configuration and more accurate head and ear canal acoustics.
Choose ALEX Compare for comparing two hearing devices head to head.
Choose ALEX Complete for everything you need to set up and provide exceptional hearing demos. With the flexibility to demonstrate features OR compare hearing aids, along with pairing 4 headphones in a carry-on, this package is optimized for supporting the widest variety of demos.
How Should Hearing Aids be Programmed for ALEX?
ALEX has realistic ear canal acoustics so you can program hearing aids just as you would on a person.
Four different listening options:
- Individual with hearing loss - program the hearing aids as you would according to their hearing loss, so it is customized to them.
- Individuals with normal hearing - program a flat 40 dB HL loss to best showcase mild gain as well as key hearing aid features.
- Individual with hearing loss and significant other - program the hearing aids customized to the individual with the hearing loss. If the gain is not too high, the significant other can experience what the individual with the hearing loss experiences. If the gain is high, recommend using a 4-way headphone amplifier (i.e. Mackie HM-4) plugged into one of the headphone jacks of ALEX, so the significant other can adjust the gain and still experience the demonstration.
- Front of office or health fair - program a common sloping loss. The listener can adjust the volume to where it is comfortable.
